(2005) surfacing
:
These little paintings serve as a continuation of my exploration of colour and form and the evocation of mood through increasingly simple compositions. My compulsion for patterning, repetitive motifs and stacking continues here and my subjects have
become so reductive as to only serve as austere symbols of the personal. Simultaneously, these cup forms act as vehicles for my ever advancing obsession with relationships of colour and space. I suspect these small and medium sized canvases are
preliminary works that will eventually serve as the springboard for more large scale, highly soaked, suede-like oil paintings -- maybe up to 7 x 9 feet. The title Surfacing references not only a play with dynamic, layered and moving grounds (the negative
space around the simple forms) and the forms themselves, but also to the appearance and illusion of things. I prefer to present my paintings as themselves -- to celebrate their "paintingness" -- to heighten this point I'm borrowing from the tricks of the
old masters -- reversing shadows, floating the picture plane -- all to remind the viewer that she is not really looking at a subject, or a picture of a subject, but rather, she is looking at a 2 dimensional surface with paint on it -- and that in itself,
is it's meaning.
