Were out of place, window shopping in Biarritz. Couples cruise
from couturier to couturier, smartly casual in high boots and furs. We press our noses to
a window, making eye contact with shopkeeper ladies dressed in black and gold.
Theres a chocolate museum, sponsored by Biarritzs famous
chocolatier, Henriet. Open the door and a blast of sticky-sweet air wafts and
clings. Henriets shop is jammed with customers. The store is small,
punctuated by a catwalk of truffles and candied fruit. Elaborately decorated wooden boxes
fill the display cases. Rich gravitates to sculptured cakes and tarts. We select a few
regional specialties: Gateau Basque (a heavy cake made with ground nuts), macaron
(meringue cookie with marzipan cream filling), biscuit noisette (caramel-coated
nuts on a shortbread cookie) and tarte citron. |
