Sketches Continued
In Art School we were asked to make something that manifested in our
minds an "Anti-monument". I thought of an everyday objectsomething one
wouldnt consider celebrating. Something unmonumental monumentalized. I built a
chair, replacing the seat with a box, and filled it with bedding plants. In this way I
made the chair functionless, except to be enjoyed visually.
Ive heard it said that Art shows itself when its function is
sensual, like the flower-chair. A classmate of mine told me, "artists serve the
emotions of the people". Aesthetic, story, and connection with others. My father,
tongue in cheek, once filled the mysterious definition with, "Art is what you can get
away with."
At this moment, Art is thoughtful play. Drawing is joyful. This game of
keeping a journal has done something surprising to the paper-musings. Examining daily
encounters, recording details that would otherwise blur into something with wind and
oranges and long shadows, has magnified the omnipresent excitement of looking. In my mind,
artists drawings are always excerpts from the Big Journal, and today mine praise me
for loving my surroundings. |
