FROM A YEAR IN NAMIBIA

Everyday day he comes to me and says, "Miss, is
there training today?" |
Im also coaching the boys Volleyball team,
which is mostly Gr. 12 learners, except for Paul, a small undersized boy with big brown
eyes and face-splitting smile. Everyday day he comes to me and says, "Miss, is there
training today?" ,and then bounds away excitedly when I tell him there is. My team is
rough, but enthusiastic. We practice on a dirt court with a terrible ball with a plastic
stopper that constantly deflates. We live in constant fear of the thorn bushes that
surround the court...one encounter with them and our volleyball days are over. For our
first game, the team travels to Windhoek to a German (White) school. We enter into a
gleaming gymnasium and find a team with 10-12 players with brand new volleyballs (needless
to say, no plastic stoppers). My mouth drops and I sense impending doom. My mishmash of
skinny players, in their torn shorts and ragged shirts line up to face huge, muscled,
stocky men in crisp white uniforms (sponsored by 7 UP). You could see how the difference
in diet during their childhood formed the two different body structures. So, the combined
advantage from years of Apartheid caused our defeat....15-2, 15-1. I claim our 3 points as
a victory and the team celebrates.. So we are now training in earnest and I have visions
of a Disney film-like improvement, where we go on to win the National Championship...or at
least a game. |
