Half full, half empty
It hit me like a ton of bricks -- an entire week in Paris and I did not buy a single
pair of shoes!!! How did that happen? Must have been those beignets a la creme. If only I
could have kept RGK out of the patisseries.
Despite
being newly shoe-less, I am finding solace in Prague. Besides, there's a Sergio Rossi
store just off the old town square and the prices (with an exchange rate of almost 1:20)
seem really reasonable. Now, if I could only keep RGK out of the souvenir shops.
Prague is wonderful and the buzz on the streets is amazing. September
/October is obviously still a popular time to travel and people fron all around the world
have gathered here to marvel. In contrast to Paris, I can barely identify any of the
languages that are being spoken around me. Although, the signs are beginning to make sense
and I almost feel like I'm at home. With a house guest to boot. RGK's friend, Mr. X, took
the train down from Berlin and we're not sure if he's ever going to leave!!!
Beer. Yup, as expected, we've been drinking a lot of beer. And in the spirit of
searching out that authentic Czech experience, we stopped by the Scarlett O'Hara Irish pub
last night to indulge in
some Celtic
rhythms. Being a slow Wednesday and slightly off the beaten track, not only were we able
to enjoy our beer, we could breathe. People here smoke and how. There was one bar we
peeked into and could barely make out the tables through the vapor mist let alone the
patrons. The only clue that there were actually imbibers inside was the din of
conversation.
Now, speaking of that Sergio Rossi store ... I thought I might actually
get in there this weekend to pick up a nice pair of leather pumps. Much to my chagrin, RGK
has discovered the Prague Post, the city's English newspaper. I didn't mind his investment
in the paper until I realized it had a sports section. Not only that but Prague
hosts both soccer and hockey teams. Not only that but there are games on
Friday, on Saturday and on Sunday. Not only that but our apartment is within easy walking
distance of both the soccer and hockey stadiums. I'm not generally known for my diplomatic
skills so the smiles, the gently nods of the head, and "oh yes dear that sounds
lovely" are beginning to grate.
Is the glass half full or half empty? We've been gone a week and a half with only that
much time remaining to go. Oh well... as they say, all good things.
I'd
be happy to consume more of your time with my eloquence but RGK and Mr. X have finished
their messages. Of course, since their version of a postcard is "Having a great time.
Wish you were here. How are the Canucks doing?" you can understand why it takes me
twice as long to write. But, they are down at the pub and it's 4:00 p.m. and there is at
least one beer there with my name on it. So excuse me and cheers to you all.
Cheers,
Reema
